Six-time champion Taufik Hidayat set-up an intriguing showdown with Denmark’s Peter Gade (below), after the two veterans reached the quarter-finals of the Djarum Indonesia Open Superseries Premier on Thursday.
Gade, the sole European survivor after Wednesday’s first round matches, continued his great run when he outplayed South Korea’s Shon Wan Ho 21-15, 21-19 to book a 17th meeting with his Indonesian rival, 13 years after their first meeting at the 1998 Danish Open.
Also through to the last eight is two-time defending champion Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia. The world No. 1, who also won this tournament in 2007, easily disposed of Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki, winning 21-17, 21-12.
He will now play seventh seeded Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh, who ousted 2008 world junior champion Wang Zhengming in three games, 21-9, 25-27, 22-20.
With Lin Dan out of the way after his stunning loss to Sho Sasaka, Chong Wei will be the favourite to become the first non-Indonesian shuttler to win the tournament three-times-in-a-row.
Ardy (1990, 1991, 1992) and Taufik (2002, 2003, 2004), are the only players to have won the Indonesian Open for three consecutive years.
"I still have to qualify for the final and there are several tough opponents waiting for me. I will have to remain focus in all my matches."
